A lot of folks feel conflicted or excluded from the holiday season when they are carrying grief. Not feeling festive, or feeling more mindful of who is not present than who is gathered, can bid us to retreat from marking seasonal celebrations.  But I don’t believe it’s an either/or kind of thing. We grieve because we love and it is only natural that we carry those losses into family and community gatherings.  I invite you to set a place at the table to remember those who have died and incorporate something of their memory into your gathering.  In my own Christian tradition, Christmas is about love that is made known and come to live among us — not in a sterilized way or into a world that is perfect.  Far from it, it’s about being born into the mess of everything, in a time of crisis, a baby born in a dangerous time to vulnerable people. There is no need to tidy up our lives or our feelings to meet this season! Create your own memorial altar or order a table mat to help get you started.

Household Altar Cloths for remembering at home https://susiehenderson.ca/household-altar-cloths-for-remembering-at-home/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 02:00:11 +0000 https://susiehenderson.ca/?p=668

In our household we’ve built a tradition of remembering those who have died by creating small memorial altars. My daughter keeps a pink ribbon that she lays out every year in memory of a friend.
We always have flowers in memory of a grandma who loved her garden. This is an altar cloth I made to remember my mom that centers around a cuppa tea. Miss you mom, love to have one more cuppa tea.

Over the next few months I will create an assortment of altars that will be available in my on-line shop on my website. Let me know what you think of this idea and if you’d like to be notified when they are ready for distribution. Also open to ideas for specific altar cloths that speak to your household.

Earth altars https://susiehenderson.ca/earth-altars/ Fri, 04 Sep 2020 03:50:00 +0000 https://susiehenderson.ca/?p=352

If you’ve ever made a sandcastle then you can appreciate ephemeral art — something that is made for the moment with an appreciation that it will not last.

These days the fragility of our natural world makes it even more precious. It’s even more important to find ways to stop and pay attention, to be with creation and with each other, to express creativity and to offer gratitude. Earth altars are part of an age-old practice of creating land art and also a contemporary movement of creation-centred spirituality. I have been taken by the work of Day Schildkret who creates impermanent art in the practice he has developed called Morning Altars.

This year instead of creating a paper card in memory of my mom on the day that she died, I spent the day wandering in the park and created this earth altar with the offerings of the season that were around me–fall leaves and a lovely bit of hydrangea for the centre. I enjoyed the time creating and just the time spent pretending to be off the grid. These days my remembering of my mom is more about being intentional to spend some time connecting to her memory and to the gifts that she offered me. So having a bit of time away to create this offering was just what I needed.
